Dear Honorable Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich:

For the past three years, residents of the communities of Acton and Agua Dulce have attended meetings and workshops pertaining to the passage of high-speed rail from Sylmar through Agua Dulce and Acton en route to Palmdale.

Residents have attended and spoken at High-Speed Rail Authority board meetings and clearly articulated their concerns that the passage of high-speed rail trains through their small communities will have detrimental effects upon their schools, property values, and will affect the quality of our rural lifestyle.

In our meetings with the engineers and consultants retained by the Rail Authority, it has become clear that our concerns will not be addressed in a satisfactory manner.

This was made even clearer to us when the authority board voted early this year to reject the alternative Interstate 5 Grapevine route and to proceed with one of three alignments from Sylmar through Agua Dulce and Acton to Palmdale.

Because of the frustration being expressed by residents, the town councils of Acton and Agua Dulce decided to conduct a survey to clearly ascertain the views of residents on high-speed rail passing through their communities.

Results of the survey of 576 residents who responded are quite startling.

n A full 85 percent of the respondents do not support high-speed rail on a statewide level.

n Even more conclusive is that 94 percent do not support a high-speed rail system from Sylmar to Palmdale through Acton and Agua Dulce based upon the three routes proposed by the High-Speed Rail Authority.

n The concept of an improved express Metrolink train as an alternative to high-speed rail from Sylmar to Palmdale was supported by 43 percent of the respondents, and 25 percent stated that they needed more information.

Based upon the clearly expressed wishes of our constituents, we respectfully request that you take a position against the three proposed high-speed rail alignments through our communities and that you inform the High Speed Rail Authority of this fact.

We also request that you provide us detailed information about plans for an improved express Metrolink train as an alternative to high-speed rail from Sylmar to Palmdale.
