Saugus volleyball and basketball player Matt Coleman was named Saugus' 2011-12 Male Athlete of the Year.

It’s difficult to excel at any one sport during your high school years — the grind of practice, followed by game, followed by more practice, is difficult by any standard.

And that’s why its so impressive when an athlete takes on the responsibilities of multiple sports.

One such athlete was Saugus’ Matt Coleman, a senior who starred on both the basketball team and the boys volleyball team — two sports that provide no reprieve from the hard work, with the Centurions’ basketball season ending Feb. 17 and the volleyball season starting Feb. 27. But for Coleman, it always came a little easier.

“Not only his skill level, but his leadership qualities and his experience,” said volleyball head coach Barry Nua of why Coleman deserved the award.

There was hard work along the way, though.

During the volleyball season, Coleman had to overcome a nagging leg injury that complicated his season. But that didn’t stop him from returning to notch 194 kills and 47 aces.

In basketball, Coleman made similar impact, averaging 12.1 points and 12 rebounds per game, earning second-team All-Santa Clarita Valley honors in both sports.

“He was fearless was his biggest thing,” said Saugus head basketball coach Derek Ballard. “He’d go after rebounds and he’d put his body in jeopardy to get it. He was exciting.”

For his ability to compete at a high level in not just one, but two sports, while consistently providing the leadership to make his teammates better, Coleman was named Saugus’ Male Athlete of the Year.
