The Hungry Valley brush fire that burned an estimated 700 acres near Gorman on the weekend is almost fully contained, a fire official said today.

The fire started shortly after noon on Saturday about five miles west of the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreational Area entrance near Gorman.

Within six hours, it swept into valleys and up hillsides, torching about 600 acres.

After 24 hours, the fire had blackened 700 acres and stopped spreading due to around-the-clock firefighting efforts coordinated by Los Padres National Forest officials.

“We’re at 95 percent containment,” said Los Padres spokesman Manny Madrigal.
