Hart High soccer player and track and field athlete Kelsey Steck.

Though technically Kelsey Steck is Hart’s Female Athlete of the Year for the 2011-12 school year, the honor may have a lot to do with the entirety of her high school career.

Steck was everything her teams needed her to be, primarily when it came to soccer. The senior acted as a mentor, a motivator and often times, simply a friend to her teammates.

And this took place over the course of four years of athletics on campus.

She ran cross country and was a sprinter on the school’s track and field team, but soccer was unquestionably her passion.

“From the few times that I saw her with other individuals, she was a true leader,” said Hart girls soccer coach Mike Gomez. “A lot of girls went up to her for advice, especially the girls in the soccer program.”

This season, Steck was moved to defender to fill in for injured players. She ended guiding one of the best units in the Foothill League. For that, she was named a first-team All-Foothill and All-Santa Clarita Valley selection.

She was one of the alpha seniors on a team that finished second in league and knocked off Saugus 2-1 on Jan. 31 to end a 20-game unbeaten streak by the Centurions.

Steck was one of the captains both her junior and senior year on the team.

“She always brought the best out of everyone around her,” Gomez said.

In track and field, she ran the 100, 200 and 400-meter races this season in addition to occasionally taking part in relays. Her best finish came in the 400, where she took second at the league finals with a time of 58.39 seconds.

Her personality always matched her strong play on the field, and it had as much to do with her Athlete of the Year title as anything.
