Letter: Signal’s TimBen Boydston editorial unfair

First, let me say, I think your editorial (“Boydston Must Think of His Constituents,” June 17) is unfairly harsh on Councilman TimBen Boydston.

In no way do I think Councilman TimBen Boydston is representing himself.

To the contrary, Councilman Boydston is bringing what has been happening in closed sessions out to the people.

This is what we elected him to do.

I do not see that Boydston is claiming “unfair treatment”; on the contrary, Boydston read the ordinance and is questioning the verbiage, that’s all. The benefit ordinance does not clearly state employees, council members or both.

There should be a distinction since we “elect” a councilperson to represent us but do not participate in the hiring process of employees. I see nothing arrogant about this.

In your editorial referring to the sign ordinance you state that these are fair candidate rules with fair candidate consequences.

How do you follow the sign ordinance when it is as poorly written in its clarification as the benefits ordinance by not including all signs such as yard signs, commercial signs and political signs and as I understood the direction from the council on June 12 the issue of the sign ordinance is still not complete and still needs clarification on some issues.

Mayor Frank Ferry (his words not mine) said Boydston was screwed and then ask that the Signal not use the word screwed), referring to the unclear and unfair treatment TimBen experienced regarding the political signs in the 2010 election because of the unclear directions that were given to the candidates.

The Signal states that elected officials should become educated and knowledgeable about their responsibilities. I believe Councilman Boydston is up to that task, and will also let the people know when something is not right.
