Dennis Franklin pleaded guilty to forgery and identity-theft charges in San Fernando Superior Court on Tuesday. Franklin's crime spree included eight victims and more than 20 banks between San Diego and Sacramento, according to a sheriff's statement.

Franklin will serve 16 months in state prison and pay $63,000 in restitution, according to the statement. Franklin, 28, of Los Angeles, was arrested Sept. 13, 2007, when he attempted to commit similar crimes at a Santa Clarita bank.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station deputies nabbed Franklin as he attempted to walk away from the bank in the 23900 block of Valencia Blvd., the sheriff's statement said.

Deputies were tipped off by bank tellers, according to sheriff officials.

At the time of his arrest, Franklin had a fake Nevada driver's license, a credit card, and a Social Security card belonging to one of the victims.

He illegally withdrew about $100,000 from his victims' accounts during his crime spree, the sheriff's statement said.

Franklin still faces similar charges in Walnut Springs and could face even more prison time.

He was ordered to surrender to the court on Jan. 20, 2009, to begin serving his sentence, the sheriff's statement said.

The Walnut Springs investigation is ongoing and there is no more information at this time.

Anyone with information regarding this suspect or this case is asked to contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station at (661) 255-1121.
