Golden Valley senior cross country/track and field runner Kristian Martinez.

Every summer and fall morning, often before the sun came up, he was there. In the afternoons, he was there, too.

He was there with his teammates, many of whom were just following his lead.

Long runs encompassing up to 14 miles were a daily routine for Kristian Martinez during cross country season, because he knew what lay at the end of those runs.

“The unique part of Kristian, and what sets him apart from many other high school athletes, is that his desire to win is only matched in intensity by his desire to work,” says former Golden Valley cross country and track and field coach Rob Evans. “He understands that only by perfecting the process can he step to the line with full confidence in his ability, so every moment of practice he confronts with a serious focus.”

Some seriously impressive results followed.

With Martinez leading the way, Golden Valley won its first state championship. And its first CIF-Southern Section championship.

Martinez always put the team ahead of himself, but individual accolades found their way to him, anyway. Martinez won the Foothill League individual title, the second runner in program history to do so, and an individual CIF-SS Div. II title, the first individual CIF title in school history.

In track, he was the league champion in the 800-meter race, and a CIF-SS Div. II finalist in both the 800 and 1,600.
But again, what meant most to him was the team’s share of its first Foothill League title.

“It is no accident that both teams he was on became champions,” Evans says. “While he earned individual titles along the way this year, I am sure he is most proud of the titles he accomplished as part of a team.”
