The new Newhall Library may receive $250,000 for new books, CDs and DVDs if the Santa Clarita City Council approves funding the new materials at its meeting Tuesday night.

The Newhall Library will be moving from its current 4,842-square-foot facility to the new 30,000-square-foot facility this September, and city officials want to purchase 10,000 to 15,000 new library materials in time for the planned grand opening Sept. 29, according to a city staff report.

The existing Newhall Library has a collection of 55,192 items. By comparison, the Canyon Country Library has 107,378 pieces.

The city has added about 9,000 new items to the Newhall Library in the past year, said Deputy City Manager Darren Hernandez.

“Our professional library staff knows what the interests of the community are and endeavor to fill the gaps in the current library material,” Hernandez said.

If the City Council approves the purchase of new materials, the money would come from the construction budget for the new Newhall Library, Hernandez said.

Although the city saved about $2 million on construction, the city was already planning to purchase new books to help fill the larger site.

“Santa Clarita residents are prolific users of the public library, and the new materials we purchase are important to meeting the literary needs of Santa Clarita Public Library patrons,” Hernandez said. “This is a great thing for Santa Clarita.”

City Council meetings are held at Santa Clarita City Hall Council Chambers, 23920 Valencia Blvd., beginning at 6 p.m.
