Letter: More on right turns

In response to "Right-turn only lane needed," June 21:

I totally agree with Gary Morrison. I live at the end of Chimney Rock Road, and I have had a front-row seat for the past 40 years to traffic on McBean Parkway just before Orchard Village Road.

His observations and analysis are totally correct. In fact, I presented the problem to City Traffic Engineer Andrew Yi in 2006. It has only gotten progressively worse.

Mr. Yi was kind enough to show me a computer program that analyzed traffic flow under various conditions and felt that the long-term flow was improved with the third lane. Computer programs often don't reflect the real world or allow for unaccounted variables, such as buses blocking the right lane at the bus stop for the hospital, or constant right turns into Granary Square, or the ability of right turns on red if not blocked onto Orchard Village.

All I can prove is what I see over the fence from my home onto McBean. The right lane is always backed up by at least a dozen cars, the center lane has half that, and the left lane has one or two.

The city has been most responsive to most citizens' inputs concerning traffic and planning, but this time I fear they chose the wrong lane.
