We need a fire escape

Dick Shaw's letter Dec. 1, 2008, reminded me that, in case of major local disasters, we live in an area for which there are too few ways to escape.

Even if one has time to load the car and pets - there they are, in what could be a major crematorium.

Our firefighters do a good job, but these recent fires suggest arson and, had there been one, we would either all have been headed toward Bakersfield (if there were no fires along the I-5 there) and/or bumper-to-bumper, frantic to flee the fire.

Bad enough to leave your home to burn, but to feel trapped between fires?

This valley has grown so much in the last 10 years, and yet there is still only one artery plus Balboa Boulevard or Highway 126 to exit ... if they are accesible.

Commuters would, I think, agree that another option would save them a lot of time (and petrol, emissions - and nerves).
