Canyon High senior girls basketball and track and field athlete Tiffini Stone was selected as the school's 2012 Female Athlete of the Year.

What is Tiffini Stone?

Is she a basketball player?

There are numbers to back up that claim. Her all-around game included 12.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.9 steals per game.

She came up big when Canyon needed her, leading the Cowboys to a co-Foothill League title and the brink of the CIF-Southern Section Division IIAA semifinals for the second straight season.

Stone earned All-Santa Clarita Valley, All-Foothill League and All-CIF honors for her efforts.

Sure seems like Stone is a basketball player. Until you get to her track and field accomplishments.

“She was our only athlete to make the state meet, competing in the long jump,” says Paul Broneer, who coached Stone in both track and field and basketball. “She set school records in both the long jump (18 feet, 5 3/4 inches) and triple jump (38-5 1/2).”

Stone was also a league champion both the jumps, and in the 4x100-meter relay. After finishing as CIF-SS Div. II runner-up in the long jump, the fourth – fourth! – CIF runner-up finish of her career, Stone came back and won the triple jump in her final attempt at CIF gold.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise. Stone is clutch, whether it’s on the court or on the field.

She was so good in track and field that she accepted a full scholarship to compete for UC Riverside.

So what is Tiffini Stone? Is she a track and field athlete, or a basketball player?

How about the best female athlete Canyon High School had to offer in the 2011-12 school year?

“In a nutshell, she is hard-working, athletic, competitive, coachable, and a determined young woman,” Broneer says.
