Letter: Boxing is a great sport

In response to "Motorcycling vs. dueling not nearly the same," June 13:

Now Don Gately has injured me in the worst possible way - by suggesting that the great sport of boxing be outlawed. I had 13 amateur boxing bouts myself (10-3), and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Boxing is not barbaric, as Gately suggests, but is merely a highly aggressive sport in the extreme. Boxing teaches one to toughen up and not to whine over every little thing.

Boxing also teaches a vital social skill: the ability to defend oneself well in a hostile world.

Also, the goal of boxing is not to injure the opponent. Rather, the goal is to hit and not get hit in return.

The funny thing is that the better one gets at the manly sport of boxing, the less physical altercations one finds oneself in on the streets, as it were.

The word gets out, and as a result, people keep their distance.
