A man on parole who joked about killing a woman probably got more than he bargained for Thursday when deputies arrived to make sure he wasn’t telling the truth, an official said.

The man was apparently shopping at Rite Aid in Saugus when he closed himself into a bathroom, where he remained for a long time, a Sheriff’s Department official said.

An employee went to check on him, the spokesman said. “He told an employee, ‘Don’t bother me — I just killed my girlfriend.’”

Deputies responded to the store on the 26800 block of Bouquet Canyon Road just after 2 p.m. and briefly detained the man while other deputies checked his home.

“We checked his residence as a precaution, but no harm was done to anyone,” the official said. “No crime was committed.”

After determining the man wasn’t mentally ill or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, deputies released him.

Lying to a drug store employee about killing someone isn’t a crime, the Sheriff’s Department spokesman explained.

“He didn’t call us directly or yell ‘fire,’” the official said.
