Santa Clarita has been ranked as the No. 1 high-growth solar city in California by solar company Sunrun.

The San Francisco-based company Sunrun, with 20,000 customers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon and Pennsylvania, said Thursday that 13 cities in the state helped drive the company’s home solar-market growth 80 percent this year.

The high-growth cities were evaluated by percent growth between May of last year to May.

In nine of the 13 high-growth cities, at least 75 percent of homeowners preferred solar service over buying panels, in a Sunrun news release, said. Offering leases and power purchase agreements helps more people with median incomes afford solar energy by removing the high upfront costs of buying solar panels. Families pay a lower rate for clean energy and fix their electric costs for 20 years.

Sunrun said it installs over $1.5 million in solar every day, completing one rooftop installation every 11 minutes of the business day.
