Los Angeles County supervisors accepted a $5,000 donation Tuesday to renovate Val Verde Park's one-and-only basketball court.

In a contest sponsored by Sprite and Albertsons, officials entered Los Angeles County basketball courts in need of repair. The $10,000 donation to the county in the Get Courts Back contest will be split equally between Val Verde Park - at 30300 W. Arlington Road in Val Verde - and Mona Park in Compton, according to a Board of Supervisors report.

Supervisors unanimously approved accepting the donation Tuesday.

A member of the Youth Activity League at Val Verde Park said last week the basketball courts have not been updated for 10 years and renovations would be welcome.

Basketball is very likely the most popular sport in Val Verde, which results in long lines court-side at the park while people wait to play on the park's only full-sized court, said Jaime Briano of the Youth Activity League.

"It's extremely popular here, even more so than softball or baseball," he said. "Basketball is a year-round sport and kids play until the park lights go off at night."

As a result of Tuesday's action, the county will enter into an agreement with the National Recreation and Parks Association as to how the money will be used.
