A woman was taken to the hospital Tuesday morning after she was apparently assaulted by a man with a hammer at a fast food restaurant in Newhall, according to fire and law enforcement officials.

Her identity or the extent of her injuries were not disclosed.

Shortly after 8 a.m., deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station were called to the Carl’s Jr. restaurant near Highway 14 at the intersection of Sierra Highway and Newhall Avenue for a report of a man wielding a hammer, Lt. Mark Hershey said.

The man was reportedly seen banging his hammer on a car in the lot.

“We received a call at 8:10 a.m. for an assault-slash-abuse,” said a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Paramedics arrived at the restaurant at 8:16 a.m. and attended to a woman at the scene, the spokesman said. She was then taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

Deputies, meanwhile, followed the suspect along Highway 14 to the 210 Freeway, Hershey said.

“They went down there and picked him up in the area of Foothill (Boulevard) and Maclay (Street) at a Chevron gas station,” he said.

They detained the suspect a block south of the 210 Freeway.

The suspect was taken back to Santa Clarita and held in the station jail, where he was questioned.

By late afternoon, detectives had formally arrested him in connection with the alleged assault, said Lt. Tom Bryski.

“Our report shows a woman was assaulted with a blunt object,” he said.
