Educators must have a voice in matters

In response to the article "Mixed emotions over charter idea" (Dec. 1), the Board of Supervisors in its zeal to install charter schools has simply dismissed the highly professional education staff of the Los Angeles County Office of Education.

By using hypocritical comparisons, a flawed methodology and not applying "evidence-based practices and polices," the Education Reform Committee under the control of the Board of Supervisors has impeded real and lasting educational reform in our juvenile justice facilities.

The proposal is filled with the rhetorical dogma that charter schools are a panacea and suitable in any and all circumstances.

Comments like those of Sharon Watson are inaccurate and counter-productive to creating the kind of reform that we all want.

There is no relevant evidence that charter schools are an appropriate academic response to students in treatment programs for incarcerated juveniles.

The first step in real reform is to listen. That's something the Educational Reform Committee has failed to do.

The professional educators of the Los Angeles County Office of Education never stop being creative, resourceful and responsive to the needs of students.

Appropriate innovation that is research-based "best practice" is always embraced; that is the heart and spirit of teaching. LACOE educators have demonstrated over time leadership in the area of educating at-risk incarcerated students.

It is now time for the educators to be heard and the Board of Supervisors to listen.
