2012 All-SCV Boys Tennis Doubles Team of the Year Cameron Braun & David Myers: Top dogs

Pairing was by far league’s best

Valencia juniors Cameron Braun and David Myers played well enough as a doubles team to earn a first-round bye in the CIF-Southern Section Division II Individual Playoffs.

Almost as soon as the Foothill League season began, it became abundantly clear that no doubles team had a chance at beating Valencia’s pairing of Cameron Braun and David Myers.

Entitled the “Hell Hounds” by their teammates, Braun and Myers ruthlessly dominated the Foothill League en route to an undefeated season, a Foothill League doubles title, and this year’s honors of All Santa Clarita Valley Doubles Team of the Year.

Perhaps no tennis unit, singles or doubles, degraded opponents in the way that the two Vikings juniors did in 2012. From an opponent’s perspective, approaching the pairing with a pragmatic game plan was simply not realistic.

Seemingly every careless groundstroke would be put away immediately, usually by the physically imposing Myers in the form of an emphatic overhead. If one were fortunate enough to escape Myers at the net, they’d have to deal with an equally impressive baseline groundstroke from Braun. If both were at the net, it was game over.

In addition to their physical prowess, the intensity the duo brought to each match could, for lack of a better word, be described as intimidating. Whether it was Braun’s animated verbiage or Myers’s quiet yet meaningful fist pumps, every time the two played, it was clear they cared about winning more than their counterparts.

It was this precise care, this incredible emotional stock in the outcome of every point, that enabled the Vikings juniors to defeat every league opponent they faced this year.

Of their 30 wins, perhaps none was more impressive than their three-set victory over teammates Jorriel Malabanan and Chad LeDuff in the Foothill League doubles final. After jumping out to a quick 6-1, 4-0 lead, Myers and Braun dropped the second set 7-6. Uncharacteristically shell shocked by their teammates’ furious rally, the two of them somehow managed to reassume control of the match and capture the third set decisively, 6-1.

After earning a bye in the first round of CIF-Southern Section Division II Individual Playoffs, the Team of the Year saw their season end at the hands of Austin Lokne and Abbay Singh of Cate High School, 6-4, 6-3.

Yet, for the Hell Hounds, their place in the CIF playoffs alone says something about the confidence their head coach has in them. In the past, the Vikings have paired their no. 1 and no. 2 singles players to compete in CIF individuals. This past season, no such match was configured, an undoubted vote of confidence in the two juniors’ abilities.

Next season, the two will look to cement themselves as one of Santa Clarita’s finest true doubles teams of all time. Inversely, one can expect Foothill League coaches to focus an excessive amount of practice time to topspin lobs.
