The Boeing Company's Thomas Armfield presented a $8,330 grant to Emily Wong, Director of Development for the Santa Clarita Valley Youth Orchestra Foundation, who accepted the funds on behalf of the Santa Clarita Valley Youth Orchestra (SCVYO) and Prelude Strings.

As part of the grant ceremony, the employees of the Boeing High Desert Community were presented with an Appreciation Plaque in acknowledgement of their contribution.

The SCVYO and Prelude Strings include young aspiring musicians from the SCV and vicinity.

The grant will be used to aid in the revival of a summer music program, support a summer music camp, and develop and sustain tools necessary for the development of young musicians.

This grant from the Boeing Company was the culmination of a year-long project undertaken by. Wong, a former SCVYO participant and now a Foundation Board Member.

She said the orchestra was an important influence in her life while growing up, and also helped round out her college application.

Now a graduate of University of California, Irvine, Wong said she took on a grant-writing role to explore ways to keep the musical groups afloat in the wake of state budget cuts.

"With so many cuts occurring, it is amazing how members of this community have reached out and pulled together to help keep these necessary programs alive," said Wong. "These programs have been integral to the development of the musical and personal growth of so many musicians."
