The only thing more consistent this season than Saugus freshman Abbey Weitzeil, was the high level of expectations that surrounded her.

In a preseason poll of the Foothill League’s six coaches, her name was combined with words like “fast, darkhorse and game changer.”

And with each passing meet, those expectations only grew.

No other freshman — in any sport — had the immediate impact that Weitzeil had this season.

Weitzeil, who has only been swimming at a competitive level for three years, was far and away the best female swimmer in the league.

It didn’t matter what event — her strength came in the sprint events, the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races, yet she was also dominant in distance races, as well — winning the league title in the 500- and 200-yard freestyle races.

Weitzeil became the only Foothill League swimmer this season to win a CIF-Southern Section Division I title when she won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.07 seconds — a William S. Hart District record.

And she wasn’t done.

Later in the meet she became the only female swimmer to win two Division I titles this season, taking the 100-yard freestyle in 49.63 seconds — good for another district record.

Over the course of the season, Weitzeil set nine Saugus High and four Foothill League records.

And those all came while practicing with her Canyons Aquatic Swim Club team — where her focus was admittedly on preparing for her upcoming races in Omaha, Neb. for the USA Swim Olympic Team Trials.

For the immediate impact Weitzeil made in her inaugural season in the Foothill League, and for her myriad accomplishments, Abbey Weitzeil is The Signal’s 2012 All-Santa Clarita Valley Girls Swimmer of the Year.

And the scariest part is — she’s just a freshman.

Even if you wouldn’t know it by watching her in the water.

Weitzeil's Season
- Set nine school records, including seven individual
- Won two individual Foothill League titles (200- and 500-yard freestyle races.
- Only CIF-SS Division I female athlete to win two division titles this season.
