Bob Kellar: Summer in full swing on Main Street in Newhall

Live From City Hall

"The summer night is like a perfection of thought," said poet Wallace Stevens.

I'm not sure where Stevens was when he shared his words, but I bet it was a place just like Santa Clarita.

That's because for most of us, summertime is hands down our favorite time of year in the city.

The weather cools at night, the days creep into the evening, and there are many things to do after work around town - even on the weekdays.

One of my favorite places to be is at Senses on Main Street, a free, themed block party hosted by the city every third Thursday of the month in Old Town Newhall.

If you haven't had the opportunity to experience a Senses event, there is no better time than this summer.

The event was designed to heighten your sense of sight, smell, touch, taste and sound, and each month the event delivers one of the best sensory experiences in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Upcoming themes for Senses include: "The 70s" on June 21; "Beach Party" on July 19; "Rockabilly Night" on Aug. 16; and Pirates on Sept. 20.

Senses is set in motion

A little over a year ago, the city approached the Old Town Newhall Association and businesses on Main Street with the monthly themed Senses event concept.

The city's goal in creating the event was to bring residents live music, food trucks, street performers, art displays, activities and opportunities to eat, drink and shop on Main Street in an after-hours environment, from 7 to 11 p.m.

In just one year, more than 20,000 people from across Santa Clarita have connected with the concept, dressing up and heading over to Main Street to enjoy a flashback to the '80s, an evening on the Vegas strip, the glitz and glam of Hollywood, the thrill of zombies, the allure of superheroes, the flash of Mardi Gras, and a trip back in time to relive the Wild Wild West.

The Old Town Newhall business community has really enjoyed and embraced the new event, with scores of business owners staying open after hours to cater to evening shoppers.

In fact, when I've attended the event, I've heard nothing but great comments from business owners who enjoy the extended hours and crowds as part of the festivities.

The free Senses events are part of the city's Thursdays at Newhall event lineup, which also includes a farmers market every Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Art Walk on the first Thursday of each month from 4 to 8 p.m.

JAM sessions

This summer, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission in partnership with the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons, will bring an eight week series of JAM sessions to Main Street in Old Town Newhall.

Every Thursday at 6 p.m., you can explore a new music or dance style while enjoying ArtWalk, the farmers market and Senses. J.A.M. session dates and themes include: drum circle on July 5, Pacific island dance and song on July 12, salsa/rueda on July 19, samba on July 26, bluegrass on Aug. 2, hip-hop on Aug. 9, swing on Aug. 16, and Bollywood on Aug. 23.
