Supervisors name interim assessor

Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday recommended that Santos H. Kreimann be appointed Chief Deputy Assessor to manage the Assessor’s Office as Assessor John Noguez prepares to take a voluntary leave of absence.

Kreimann’s nomination will be considered by the supervisors during their June 19 meeting. A salary and start date for Kreimann has yet to be determined.

“I thank the Board of Supervisors for taking immediate action on my request to make a recommendation,” Noguez said in a statement. “I am looking forward to appointing Mr. Kreimann Chief Deputy. As soon as he assumes his position, I will begin my leave of absence.”

Noguez has been under suspicion in recent months after a former Los Angeles County appraiser, Scott Schenter, was accused of unlawfully lowering property values by more than $170 million while he worked for the assessor’s office from 1988 to 2011.

Authorities say he secured campaign contributions for Noguez from the owners of multimillion-dollar homes and businesses.

Schenter has pleaded not guilty to 60 felony counts of falsifying records and unlawfully lowering property values.
Noguez has denied any wrongdoing.

Kreimann was appointed Director of Beaches and Harbors in 2009. He is a longtime county employee with more than 18 years of experience in various county departments, including the Treasurer and Tax Collector’s Office, the Department of Health Services, the Chief Administrative Office and the Department of Beaches and Harbors.
