Hey, Detroit, how about some creativity?

Instead of a total bailout for the Detroit Three, what about making it attractive for prospective car buyers to buy an American-made vehicle?

Years ago the federal government allowed taxpayers to deduct the interest they paid on credit cards from their gross income.

What if the government allowed folks to deduct from their gross income a percentage of the purchase price or the interest they pay on a new or used Chrysler, Ford or GM vehicle? Since owning a car is almost a necessity if you are working, it seems logical to consider a vehicle a work-related expense. Even if the car is not work-related, this proposal sure would stimulate sales of American-made cars.

Since homeowners have been getting this tax advantage for as long as I can remember, why not give this same consideration to those who support the Big Three - not to mention struggling auto dealerships?
