Members of Christ Lutheran Church organized a video shoot in May to mark the 50th anniversary of the Valencia church. The video was designed to highlight the efforts of the congregation and its service to the Santa Clarita Valley.

Fifty years ago, a group of Santa Clarita Valley churchgoers drove to the San Fernando Valley every Sunday morning to worship.

They soon realized that they wanted to have their own Lutheran church within the local community and a new effort began to create what would eventually become Christ Lutheran Church.

In 1961, the first service was held at what was then the Saugus Rollerama and a year later the congregation was formally organized.

Over the years, the church has moved, eventually to its permanent location on Tournament Road. Throughout the changes, church leaders say they have always remained committed to God and spreading the love of Christ.

Christ Lutheran Church in Valencia recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. The theme of the celebrations and programs was the idea that “God’s best is yet to come.”

“It is a blessing from God we’ve been able to serve here and serve Him,” Associate Pastor Mike Matzek said. “It’s amazing how God has been working in this place for 50 years.”

Caring congregation

Pauline Nossaman, 78, is one of the original members from when the church was first started, and is in awe of how far the church has come. She has watched the progression from a group of nearly 100 people worshiping in a roller rink to the many people that serve in the congregation today.

“I’m proud of how the church has developed,” she said. “We are a church that wants to be involved in every way. We don’t just care about our group of people, we care about the community.”

Christ Lutheran assembled a lip sync video that commemorates the 50 years and shares their attitude toward service. In addition, they took up a donation for two mission projects. One was to help a church in South Dakota celebrating its 150th anniversary, by restoring the stained glass windows. The other was help for a new mission congregation in Garden Grove.

“This is our way of honoring the people who have gone ahead and recognizing that God’s best is yet to come,” Matzek said.

The church began the celebrations in the fall with a kickoff celebration and held a large worship celebration, dinner and program in May. They invited three speakers to talk about their experiences; a long time member, a new member and a member that has grown up in the church.

The services and special offerings were the churches way of recognizing the people who helped lay the foundation.

“I do believe the Lord was leading us,” Nossaman said, “probably having a few chuckles along the way.”
