Crime throughout the Santa Clarita Valley is up nearly 10 percent compared to the same time period last year, with crime in nearly every category — except homicide and arson — increasing, according to information released by sheriff’s officials Wednesday.

Although the numbers are up from last year, the numbers are still down compared to five years ago, said Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Capt. Paul Becker.

“We are comparing against (last year), that was absolutely the lowest the city of Santa Clarita has ever seen,” Becker said, discussing the double-digit increase in the percentage of property and violent crimes reported.

One of the biggest jumps from last year’s numbers was in forcible rape, with the numbers increasing from seven reported incidents January to May 2011 to 17 reported incidents during the same time period this year.

Arson remained steady, and homicide dropped from one in 2011 to none so far this year, according to the statistics.

Robbery increased from 40 in 2011 to 57 this year, and aggravated assault increased from 89 in 2011 to 124 this year.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department sees fluctuations all the time, Becker said. He said that part of the problem could be due to realignment bill AB 109 — a state bill that translates to early release of certain prisoners.

“I think crime rates ebb and flow as we march throughout the year,” Becker said. “I’m looking at realignment as a potential contributing factor.”

Currently, there are 69 people who have been released under the bill in the Santa Clarita Valley, Becker said. Of the 64 people who were released as of last month, 29 percent had been rearrested.

Each day, the department examines the statistics and increases its focus in the eight zones around the valley, Becker said.

“That’s why it’s not so alarming, yet,” Becker said. “We’re looking at the crime stats every day.”
