Clarice’s staff celebrates the 25th year of ownership by Nanci Olmos: from left, Olmos, Rosie Hale, Rebecca Angelotti, Nannette Schmidt and Barbie Campeau at their anniversary celebration in Newhall on Saturday.

Located in Santa Clarita for 35 years, Clarice’s Cake and Candy Supplies current owner celebrated her 25-year anniversary as owner Saturday.

“I bought  the store from Clarice,” said owner Nanci Olmos. “She’s 92 years old, and still has a key to the store.”

Selling everything from cake pans, boxes and sucker sticks to cake fillings and toppings to both professional and amateur chefs, Clarice’s also offers some 200 cake decorating classes a year to adults and young people.

“We sell 30 different flavors of fillings,” Olmos said.

Local cupcake stores buy supplies from Clarice’s, Olmos said, but she also sells to many independent stores in the greater Los Angeles County region and mails supplies all over the United States.

“A small, independent store can buy smaller quantities,” Olmos said. “We buy from wholesale bakery suppliers in big 50-pound drums or cases and we repackage it.”

With six part-time employees, the Newhall store is open Tuesday through Saturday.

Clarice’s also bakes goods for customers to take home and decorate, taking the preparation, ingredient gathering and measuring out of the equation for someone who wants to make a great cake or cupcakes for a special occasion. All sizes of cakes are sold, prepackaged with filling and whatever else is necessary and can be purchased frozen.

“Also, during the holidays, we make lots of sugar and gingerbread cooking at the store,” Olmos said. “We bake the cookies, and people decorate cookies at their house to make it easy for them.”

“When the country is in trouble, people switch to homemade products,” Olmos said, explaining why the company has lasted as long as it has.

Olmos, who has been running the store with the help of her two daughters, said she shopped at Clarice’s under the original owner. Her mom gave her cake-decorating lessons because, “She always played with her food,” she said.

Starting in Clarice’s home when there was nothing much here but fields, Olmos said, the business eventually opened in a tiny spot on San Fernando Road, before moving to its current location in Newhall.

When Clarice wanted to retire, she made a list of five customers that would be appropriate to take over the business, Olmos said. And Olmos ended up winning the bid to buy the business.

With no active website, Olmos has grown her business solely through advertising and word-of-mouth referrals.

“I love it,” she said. “I love my store and put in a lot of blood, sweat and tears into it. Our motto is, ‘We bake with love.’”
