’Tis the season

I wanted to write to The Signal to let you know of the sincere kindness of one of your local dentists.

I am the co-founder of Ffena, a future nonprofit corporation. (We are still waiting on our actual filings to go through the state.)

Currently, we are teaming up with an organization that travels to the downtown Los Angeles area once a month to hand out donated food, water, clothing, and toiletries to L.A.'s homeless.

We had the opportunity to travel with them in November and were able to experience first-hand the unfortunate truth of our city streets.

In speaking with some of the people we encountered, we found that many of them wanted something we didn't have with us, a basic necessity that had not been donated, nor had I even thought to bring, a commodity I apparently had taken for granted ... a simple toothbrush and toothpaste.

The next morning, I set out on a mission with my partner at Ffena, Nancy Burgos. We wrote a letter asking local dentists if they would be willing to donate any spare toothbrushes or toothpaste they may have on hand.

We mailed out 60 letters to dentists in Pasadena, North Hollywood and Valencia. Several weeks passed and we had not received a single response.

We had just about given up on our idea when I received a phone call from the office of Doctors Allen and Kelly Smudde on Nov. 24.

The Smuddes wanted to donate six boxes of toothbrushes and a box full of toothpastes to our cause! To this day, the Smuddes' was the only dentist office to respond to our letter.

I cannot express how grateful I am to live in a community with such generous people.

I wanted to show them my gratitude by writing to The Signal to let you know what wonderful people reside in the Santa Clarita area.

It really goes to show you, we live in a fabulous area with outstanding individuals such as the Smuddes.
