Tess Carlos was recently selected by the Los Angeles County Commission for Older Adults to be honored at the 47th annual Older Americans Recognition Day Awards. The awards were presented at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on May 23.

For more than 47 years, the month of May has been proclaimed as Older Americans Month throughout Los Angeles County by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

Carlos was named Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center Senior of the Year and nominated for the county award by the SCV Senior Center. She has served as a volunteer at the Senior Center for 16 years.

She was accompanied to the awards ceremony by her husband, June Carlos; Linda Alexander-Lieblang, SCV Senior Center associate executive director; and Robin Clough, SCV Senior Center director of volunteers.

The president of the Los Angeles County Commission on Aging, Bernard Weintraub, congratulated the awardees and said that he was "honored by the presence of these extraordinary volunteers and for the opportunity to recognize their contributions."

Weintraub continued, "You represent centers and organizations throughout Los Angeles County that provide services to a senior population in excess of 1.2 million. Because of your significant volunteer contributions, you were selected as an Outstanding Older American for 2012. The commission is most pleased for the opportunity to recognize your accomplishments and to showcase them as living examples for others to emulate."

Carlos' name was submitted for the award on behalf of Supervisor Michael Antonovich. Commissioners from the Commission on Aging presented Tess Carlos with a certificate.

As Carlos came forward to receive her award, a narrative written by Clough was read at the event.

"Tess Carlos has been an extraordinary volunteer at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center for 16 years.

"Because of her passion for helping seniors, she assists in any capacity needed.

"She has played a vital role in large and small fundraisers and often even takes the initiative in creating ways to raise money to support the center.

"Tess enhances lives by coordinating a monthly dance, which includes live music, decorations, and refreshments. She serves as assistant to the activities director, ensuring fun and joy at all events.

"Through Supportive Services, Tess visits the Filipino elderly to stave off isolation and serves as an interpreter.

"She is a liaison between the center and the Filipino community, enabling seniors of this demographic to receive vital care."

Clough said Carlos "is an invaluable volunteer who is committed to improving the lives of seniors."

"Her positive attitude is contagious, and she is an incredible asset to the Center and the community," Clough said.

The SCV Senior Center is located at 22900 Market St., Newhall. Volunteers are needed at the SCV Senior Center to: pack nutritious meals for homebound seniors 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.; deliver meals to homebound seniors 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and serve meals and clean, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"One day a week is all it takes to make a difference," said Clough.
