Congratulations to the Saugus girls cross country team

If one could only see the look on the faces of the girls who run for the Saugus cross country team after one of their races.

Eyes rolled back, a pinkish hue to their faces, sweat rolling down and mouths wide open as their lungs implore for air.

Their posture tells even more.

Some of them are hunched. Others are stiff.

After 17 to 20 minutes of a five-kilometer sacrifice, the girls are dead tired.

The sacrifices only end there.

They begin in the summer, long before the season starts.

The girls start their practice days at 6 a.m. and run for 80 to 120 minutes.

Then, nine hours later, they come back for more.

Maybe they lift weights after that.

The end result for the last three years has been championships.

On Nov. 29, the band of sisters won a third straight state cross country title in Fresno for Saugus High - breaking their own state record time.

This gave them the title of "Greatest Girls Cross Country Team in California History."

On Saturday, they finished second in the prestigious Nike Team Nationals in Portland, Ore.

For these accomplishments, the Saugus girls cross country teams of not only 2008, but also 2006 and 2007, will always be remembered in this valley as sports royalty.

But furthermore, they have shown that in a sport that measures time, their will, sacrifice and commitment are immeasurable.
