A 12-year-old Valencia boy who died last week hours after falling off his bicycle was not wearing a bicycle helmet, a county coroner's official said Sunday.

Gabriel Tambong died of blunt-force trauma, said Lt. Cheryl MacWillie of the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner.

The fatal accident happened Wednesday when the boy went down a hill on a bicycle, fell and suffered what appeared to be only minor abrasions.

"He was going down a hill on his bike and lost control," MacWillie said.

"He complained of pain and fell asleep," she said, reviewing a report prepared by a coroner's investigator.

"The investigator says he was not wearing a helmet," she said.

Tambong died just after 10 p.m. Wednesday at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital just hours after the crash.

The boy appeared to suffer only minor abrasions from the afternoon fall, but he was taken to the hospital by a relative who found him unconscious later Wednesday, coroner's spokesman Craig Henry told The Signal on Thursday.
