Cathie Wright enters the 25th Congressional District race open primary seeking to carrying on the legacy begun by her mother, who died just last month.

Wright, a 47-year-old Simi Valley single divorced mother of one teenage child, embodies many of the “every woman” situations she hopes the Wright legacy will address.

For 20 years, she worked in a grocery store, going to school at night, trying to make ends meet and living, as she says on her website, paycheck to paycheck.

“Our country has got to take steps to not just live within our means, but also pay back the money we have borrowed,” she writes on her site. “Our parents and grandparents made the necessary sacrifices for us to have a good life; now it is our turn to make the necessary sacrifices.”

Wright, a registered Republican, was born Victoria Catherine Wright in Hollywood in 1964.

A year later her family moved to Simi Valley, which has remained her home ever since.

She went to both public and private schools, graduating from Apollo High School in 1981.

Wright learned from the example set by her mother, Cathie Wright, just how a single mother can be effective and make a difference when her father died shortly after she graduated.

Her mother represented the Santa Clarita Valley during the ’80s when President Reagan was in the White House. She was elected to California Assembly in 1980 and to the state Senate in 1992, then re-elected in 1996.
Cathie Wright Sr. died last month.

In speaking of her mother’s legacy, Wright told The Signal in February: “I learned a lot from my mother. One of the things I learned is that you have to be one of the people.

“I used to ask my mother, ‘Mom, why do you have our phone number listed?’ And she would say, ‘I want my constituents to always be able to pick up the phone and call me,’” she said.

Wright, who has a Bachelor of Arts degree, is working on her master’s degree and currently taking courses in criminology.
