The pomp and circumstance of a Bakersfield elementary school graduation was interrupted by an unexpected guest: a black bear that wandered onto school property.

The Bakersfield Californian reports that the young black bear crashed the graduation ceremony at Ramon Garza Elementary School on Thursday, forcing students who were outside back to their classrooms.

The bear was noticed by a teacher, who alerted officials.

Animal control officers later cornered the animal at an apartment complex, hit it with a stun gun and turned it over to the California Department of Fish and Game. Wildlife officials intend to release it.

Authorities believe the 125-pound bear might have followed the Kern River into town looking for water.
