Maybe it’s because it was their third game in four nights. Maybe it’s because El Camino is really good.

Any way you slice it, the Valencia Vikings struggled in the first and third quarters Friday night -- and fortunately for them, their impressive second and fourth quarters proved to be the decisive blow in a chippy 66-53 win over El Camino at the High Five Classic at Valencia High School.

For the second night in a row, the Vikings turned a close game into a comfortable victory with a mix of starters and reserves on the floor.

“I thought it was kind of like (Thursday), where different players are doing that,” Valencia head coach Jerry Mike said.

For whatever reason, Valencia (3-0) came out stagnant both in the first quarter and right after halftime. Viking point guard Lindsey Hill provided a spark by attacking the defense and scoring her team’s first six points of the second quarter en route to a 10-0 run that started the period.

Mike says it’s something he’s come to expect.

“She does that,” he said. “She’ll score six or eight points and then everybody else kind of gets going.”

El Camino (3-1) roared back from an 11-point halftime deficit in the third thanks in large part to Sarah Rebibo, who scored 13 of her game-high 23 points in the quarter.

Once the fourth quarter began, Valencia turned up its defense and transition game to blast ahead for good.

Valencia will  face Saugus in the High Five Classic championship at 6 p.m. today.
