It's the official start of summer in the Santa Clarita Valley, Memorial Day Weekend. I hope everyone travels safe and enjoys a wonderful three-day weekend. Bring on the Fourth of July!

Memorial Day

It's a day to remember our fallen heroes and the Santa Clarita Valley will host appropriate ceremonies on Monday during a special annual event held at Eternal Valley Memorial Park and Mortuary in Newhall. The 23rd annual Memorial Day celebration will begin at 10 a.m. at the park on the 23200 block of Sierra Highway.

The celebration, organized by Eternal Valley officials and the SCV Veterans Memorial Committee, is scheduled to feature speeches from Vietnam veteran and former Marine R.J. Kelly, retired Senior Chief Petty Officer Duane Harte, and Rabbi Mark Blazer of Temple Beth Ami. In addition, two bronze stars will be awarded to two Vietnam veterans, after 40 years.

Following the ceremony, members of American Legion Post 507 will host a Memorial Day barbecue with free music and food at 24500 Spruce St. in Newhall from noon to 4 p.m.

Seen at VIP Auction Party

The Boys & Girls Club Foundation certainly knows how to throw a VIP party. The annual VIP auction preview party, held at the home of Richard and Marian Sandnes in Sand Canyon, offered guests wonderful food from RSVP Catering and a beautiful setting. Seen at the event were: Julie Benson and Bruce Krumrine, Jacquie and Harold Petersen, Erica and Bill Cloyd, Jack and Doreen Shine, Tony Newhall, Wayne Crawford, Shelley and G. Marshall Hann, Dennis Poore, Myrna and Gary Condie, Pat Allen, Pauline and Duane Harte, Tom Dierckman, Gloria Mercado-Fortine, Candy and Brad Spahr and Allan Barbakow.

Only 300 raffle tickets at $100 each will be sold by the Boys & Girls Club of SCV with the winner able to choose any live auction item. Imagine! Start dreaming! Winners need not be present to win; they simply need to indicate which live auction item they will select, in advance. The only item off limits is the 2013 Auction Head Table. For tickets, call the Club at 661-254-3063.
