On this date in the SCV: In 1980, a shoplifter who used a baby to help with his criminal activity was arrested after stealing items from at least four Newhall stores. The shoplifter, carrying a baby in an infant carrier, stole merchandise by slipping it under the baby’s blankets.

On May 23, 1937, industrialist and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, founder of the Standard Oil Co. and the Rockefeller Foundation, died in Ormond Beach, Fla., at age 97.
