Valencia boys volleyball went on its deepest postseason run since 2008 this spring.

And the postseason’s not over yet.

The Vikings have been seeded fifth in the CIF-Southern California Division I Regional Volleyball Championships, and they will travel to take on fourth-seeded Palisades High of Pacific Palisades at 7 p.m. today.

Valencia applied for one of the regional spots, according to head coach Kevin Kornegay, and is excited to have been accepted.

“We weren’t sure we were going to get it,” Kornegay said. “It’s a bonus for the senior class.”

The Dolphins (24-2) didn’t drop a single game over four matches in winning the CIF-Los Angeles City Section Division I title last week, culminating in a 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-23) victory over Granada Hills High in the championship on Saturday.

Valencia (20-14) has played Palisades twice this season, losing in five games at the Santa Barbara Karch Kiraly Tournament of Champions and beating the Dolphins 2-0 at the Redondo Power Classic.

“They spread the ball around,” Kornegay said. “They have one solid middle and a couple good outside hitters. I think we really match up well with them. It’s the kind of game that could go either way.”

The Vikings reached the CIF-Southern Section Division II semifinals before falling to eventual champion Oak Park in three sets last Tuesday. They hadn’t been past the quarterfinals since winning their fourth and most recent Southern Section title in 2008.

The Southern California Regional Championships will take place this week and feature 24 total teams evenly divided among Divisions I, II and III. First-round matches will take place today, with the semifinals on Thursday and the Regional Finals on Saturday at Irvine Valley College.

The Division I bracket also includes top-seeded Otay Ranch of Chula Vista from the San Diego Section; No. 2 Loyola of Los Angeles; No. 3 Buchanan of Clovis from the Central Section; No. 6 Warren of Downey; No. 7 Poway from the San Diego Section; and No. 8 Santa Monica.
