CAIMAN SEIZED FROM SANTA CLARITA HOME: CAIMAN’S ARE NOT PETS

Castaic - Perhaps one of the most uncommon calls officers from the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) have responded to in quite some time, Castaic Animal Care officers confiscated a small caiman from a home in Santa Clarita on Thursday, May 17, 2012.

DACC officers were called to assist on the 27000 block of Ron Ridge Drive in the City of Santa Clarita. The County of Los Angeles Probation Department requested DACC's assistance in the midst of a probation violation, which is when the two-foot, four-year-old, American caiman was discovered.

The caiman is in good condition, while DACC staff work to place it in a permitted facility. It is illegal to own or house caimans in Los Angeles County, unless it is in a permitted facility, sanctioned with a permit from the California Department of Fish and Game.

As a reminder, caimans (or other similar wild, exotic animals) are not intended to be family pets.

"This incident serves as a reminder that caimans are not meant to be pets," said Castaic Animal Care Manager, Karen Stepp. "In addition to being illegal, they are dangerous, unpredictable, and can severely harm humans," Stepp said. They also require very particular care and nutrition that most families cannot provide.

The caiman's owner is currently incarcerated and charges against the owner are likely to be filed for illegally owning/possessing a wild animal.
