Steve Lunetta: Division in the SCV Republican Party ensues

Right About Now

As usual, his call came at 2 a.m. One of the main operatives in the Obama administration, he calls me to taunt and insult the Grand Imperious Leader of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy (that would be me) and our conservative beliefs.

I've never met Deep Carl, but, strange as it may seem, I have always found his phone calls highly entertaining.

Brrrring.

"Are we alone?" queried Carl.

"Carl," I retorted, "it's 2 a.m., and I'm answering your call from my bed, where I was asleep. Fast asleep."

"Don't worry about that. I just called to find out how our master plan is working out. You know, the destruction of the Santa Clarita Valley Republican Party." He snickered.

"What are you talking about, Carl?" I asked. "Our party is piloted by the 38th Assembly District Republican Central Committee, a bastion of conservatism and all-around good folks. In fact, the committee is chaired by a member of Buck McKeon's own staff. We've had a great deal of success with him at the helm."

Carl countered, "Oh really? Is this the same Republican Party rocked by infighting, splitting and warring clubs, suppression of different ideas, berating longtime Republican Party members, and insulting 87-year-old grandmothers? You really are deceived, Conspiracy Leader."

"You are crazy, Carl," I replied. "None of these things are happening."

"'These are not the droids you are looking for. Move along,' he said. "You are truly deluded, Steve. We have manipulated this situation from the beginning. The destruction of the Republican Party in Santa Clarita has been relatively easy. All we had to do was push a little and the leaders did the rest.

"In fact, your current leaders have been quick to attack loyal party members," he said. "A current member of the Central Committee recently attacked a volunteer named Bill in a series of emails, going so far as to call him a ‘nasty, mean man'."

"Pretty dumb that this would be written in an email that would then get circulated" I noted.

Carl was on a roll.

"That's not all," he said. "In a recent California Republican Assembly meeting, an election was held for new leadership. One of the leaders and her cohorts were voted out of office. This was after numerous alleged attempts to influence the voting, including forcing members to stand to vote, attempting to invalidate some members voting status and other dirty tricks. All of this resulted in yelling and accusations and then splitting the club and making a new CRA."

I was incredulous.

"That can't be," I said. "These folks are long-time leaders of the party, and I cannot believe that they would be so ungraceful and immature. That simply is not the people I know."

"Then you don't know your leadership," he replied.

Carl gave a raspy laugh.

"The current leadership is not above name-calling, intimidation, innuendo and chicanery," he continued. "Now that they are on the way out, they are going kicking and screaming. The damage will last for years."

"But they have done so much to build the party," I shot back.

Carl lined me up in his sights.

"Then why do they discourage CRA membership?" he asked. "One CRA applicant supposedly tried repeatedly to submit his application and dues. A leader finally called him and subjected him to a ‘screening' to make sure he was the right ‘flavor' to admit to the club (not tea-flavored). He eventually got in, but not after a blatant attempt at manipulation."

I was beginning to get dizzy.

"This can't be," I said. "Party senior leadership would never let this happen."

"Is that so?" Carl asked. "Who do you think is the puppet master? When the legitimately elected CRA leadership went to an endorsement function, the ‘breakaway' CRA leaders showed up and tried to silence the other side. In fact, the breakaway group brought in a ‘parliamentary expert' who tried to use arcane procedure rules to gag the legitimate leaders."

"I have to get off the phone, Carl. This is making me ill," I said.

"Go ahead and stick your head in the sand, Steve. But you know I am right," he shot back. "The destruction of your party is coming fast and you are completely unaware!"

At that, he hung up.

Greatly disturbed, I called my Uncle Earl. Surely with Earl's great wisdom and knowledge, he would share greater insight into the SCV Republican mess.

Next week: Earl expands my mind further. The level of dysfunction is worse than I thought.

Steve Lunetta is a resident of Santa Clarita and does not like to be wakened at 2 a.m. by phone calls like this - unless you are dishing dirt. He can be reached at slunetta63@yahoo.com.
