The region’s top boys tennis athletes were on display Friday at the CIF-Southern Section 2012 Boys Individual Tennis Regionals.

Valencia was the lone Foothill League representative with two singles players participating at Cate School in Carpinteria and two doubles teams at Carpinteria High School.

J.R. Macalutas dispatched lefty Drew Freeman of Beverly Hills High School 6-0, 6-1 in the first round, before falling to another lefty, No. 2-seeded Blake MacKall of Cate, 6-2, 6-3.

“(Macalutas) was great. He played his heart out today,” said Valencia head coach Annie Kellogg. “(MacKall) was just big and strong. He was a lefty and hit with a lot of spin. (Macalutas) played really well, it was a great match to watch.”

Valencia had one other winner on the day in the doubles team of Chad LeDuff and Jorriel Malabanan.

The duo defeated Oak Park’s Jack Heald and Anish Purl 6-4, 6-3, but fell in the second round 6-1, 6-2 to No. 1 seed Chris Lees and Daniel Minami of Thousand Oaks High School.

The Vikings doubles team of David Myers and Cameron Braun received a first-round bye before losing to Austin Lokne and Abbay Singh of Cate 6-4, 6-3 in the second round.

Also from Valencia, Joey Fernicola made the field but lost 6-1, 6-2 to Nordhoff’s Evan Edwards in the first round.
