CIF baseball: SCCS moves up a peg

Cards defeat Animo Leadership in extra innings

Santa Clarita Christian head coach Garrick Moss has experienced a lot of things since his baseball coaching debut in 2000, but the Cardinals first-round playoff game against Animo Leadership was atypical even to him.

The game was delayed while Animo Leadership of Inglewood officials dug out a home plate from another field and buried it on the diamond at Darby Park so the two teams could play.

When it was all over, though, the delay was more of a nuisance than a deterrent as SCCS’s Ryan Fullarton was stellar for eight innings in a 6-2 Cardinals’ victory.

With the win, SCCS (15-6 overall) advances to play either Temecula Prep or Shalhevet on Tuesday.

“You play on some fields that are pretty rough over the years, some schools don’t have facilities like us,” Moss said. “We’re blessed to play at The Master’s College and Hart PONY field. There are some fields you go to that are not great but this, it makes you thankful.”

Once the field situation was fixed, it was Fullarton who stole the show.

The senior pitched a complete-game eight innings, allowing just two unearned runs and striking out nine.

He was also 3-for-5 with three RBIs at the plate to lead the Cardinals.

The Cardinals led 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh before things got shaky.

The Aztec Eagles (11-9) leadoff batter reached second on an error and was brought home after a pop up landed in no-man’s land behind the second baseman to tie the score at two.

But again, it was Fullarton who came up with the much-needed plays.

The pitcher fielded a sacrifice-bunt attempt and nailed the runner heading for third base for the first out of the inning before the Cardinals turned a double play to get out of the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, still tied at two, Ryan O’Neil walked to lead off the inning and Christian Broadbent singled to put runners on first and second.

After a walk, senior Chad Latch came up to the plate and worked a walk to give the Cardinals the eventual game-winning run.

Fullarton added a double after Brandt Anderson was hit with the bases loaded to set the score at 6-2.

Broadbent finished 2-for-4 with a run and Chad Latch was 1-for-1 with three walks and an RBI.
