The 2012 edition of the USA Softball Women’s National Team could look quite familiar to fans of the Foothill League.

The national team announced the 21 athletes who have accepted invitations to try out for the final five spots, and two former locals were included in the group.

Jessica Shults, a Hart graduate and current University of Oklahoma catcher, and Madison Shipman, a Valencia graduate and current University of Tennessee player, will attend the 2012 USA Softball Women’s National Team Selection Camp in Ashlan, Ohio from June 10-12.

Final rosters will be announced on June 13.

The invitations come on the heels of Shults receiving First-Team Big 12 honors and Shipman being named to the Southeastern Conference First Team.

If either Shults or Shipman make the final team, they will join former Valencia High and University of Michigan graduate Jordan Taylor.

Taylor was one of 12 athletes previously named to the national team in January.

Athletes who do not make the final national team are named to the 2012 USA Softball Women’s Elite National Team and will face the national team in an exhibition game.

The national team will then play in the Title IX 40th Anniversary Celebration Game against Canada on June 23 and the World Cup of Softball VII from June 27-July 2 in Oklahoma City.

Both Shults and Shipman played today in the regional round of the NCAA Division I Softball Championships.

Shults’ Oklahoma team defeated Lehigh 19-3 in the Norman Regional while Shipman’s Volunteers lost 1-0 to Miami of Ohio in the Knoxville Regional.
