Former All-Santa Clarita Valley Softball Player of the Year Jessica Shults was named to the All-Big 12 First Team on Tuesday for her performance this season as the Univeristy of Oklahoma catcher.

Shults, a Hart High graduate, tied for third in the Big 12 in hits (59) and home runs (16), was second in total bases (117) and was fourth in RBIs with 48 and slugging percentage with a .713.

It was a bounce-back season for Shults, who missed the final weeks of the regular season last year with pan ulcerative colitis, which is a chronic disease of the colon marked by inflammation and ulceration of the innermost lining, according to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America’s official website.

Earlier this season, Shults was named one of the top 25 finalists for the 2012 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year for the first time in her career.

Oklahoma will return to the field Friday when it hosts Lehigh at 7 p.m. in its first game of the NCAA softball Norman Regional.
