Santa Clarita Valley sheriff's deputies and other law enforcement agencies throughout the state will be increasing their seat belt enforcement starting May 21.

Deputies will be enforcing seat belt laws around the clock in an effort to save more lives, according to a release by the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station. In 2010 alone, seat belts saved an estimated 12,546 lives nationwide.

The ticket enforcement mobilization runs from May 21 through June 3, but the law is enforced year-round. Total costs of a first-time ticket are at least $142.
