Letter: Obama uses Bush as scapegoat for failures

Kevin Buck's May 8 column was a foreshadowing of what we can expect in this year's presidential election: constant repetition of the now-standard leftist meme of blame George W. Bush (except for getting Osama bin Laden, of course), with a smattering of blame Reagan.

In actuality, most of our current fiscal woes can be traced back to the policies of Woodrow Wilson and FDR - both of whom held the Constitution in low regard - but that's a topic for a different letter.

Here's the real issue: even assuming the things Buck noted in his column are true - a credibility-straining assumption - what did Barack Obama run on for his first term? Hope and change.

On February 1, 2009, immediately after he took office, he told Matt Lauer, "One nice thing about the situation I find myself in is that I will be held accountable. You know, I've got four years. A year from now, I think people are going to see that were starting to make some progress. But there's still going to be some pain out there. If I don't have this done in three years, then there's going to be a one-term proposition." (See: http://youtu.be/CCN5-ovvFL0)

What have we constantly heard for the last three years? Blame Bush. It's not my fault. The buck doesn't stop here. The dog ate my homework. Where's that accountability he bragged about to Lauer?

One of two things happened: Either he was truly ignorant of what his prediction entailed - in which case he was just plain unqualified for the job - or he lied.

Either way, I think it's time that Obama be held to his promise: that he be held accountable, and that there's a one-term proposition.
