It was a “nerve-racking” Mother’s Day for one Canyon Country mom whose aunt became a missing person sought by local sheriff’s deputies Sunday.

“My kids called me in the morning and said ‘Happy Mother’s Day, Mom” and I told them ‘No, it’s not,” said Geraldine Frith.

Frith woke up shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday and discovered her aunt left the family home on Shadow Island Drive home, near Rio Vista Elementary School, in a car.

Missing is 87-year-old Gladys Loyd, who moved in with her niece in October.

“She’s done this a couple of times before,” Frith told The Signal. “And, it’s nerve-racking.”

The first time Loyd went missing, she was found in Azusa about 40 miles from her home, Frith said.

Loyd, who was born in Wisconsin in 1924, lived for a while in Torrance.

“She lived in Torrance and ended up being found in Azusa 36 hours later,” Frith said.

About 40 years ago, Loyd lived in San Bernardino, about 40 miles east of Azusa.

The second time Loyd went missing was for three days, Frith said.

“The police in Whittier found her that time,” she said.

Local sheriff’s deputies began looking for Loyd as soon as she was reported missing early Sunday morning, said Sgt. Rich Nagler of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Deputies are looking for a “silverish gray” Honda CRV bearing the license plate 4PYB089, which the woman is believed to be driving.

“The trouble is, when the family woke up shortly after 5 this morning she had already left,” Nagler said. “She could have a huge jump on us.”

Loyd, who moved in with her relatives in October, was last seen wearing a blue velvet jump suit.

At 9 p.m. Sunday, Loyd had been missing for at least 16 hours.

“She’s still missing,” said Lt. Tom Bryski.

Anyone spotting the car or the woman is asked to call the sheriff’s station at 255-1121.
