I hope all the mothers in the Santa Clarita Valley have the Mother’s Day of their dreams! Breakfast in bed, a spa package and a great meal at one of the many wonderful SCV restaurants. Happy Mother’s Day to SCV moms!

A great mom’s day gift!

If you forgot that today is Mother’s Day, you can grab your mom’s iPad or laptop and sign her up for the e-edition of The Signal. The complete Signal newspaper (it looks just like the print product) is available for only $75 a year or $6.25 a month. Sign up at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pressreader/id313904711?mt=8.

Give The Standup Guys

Another great gift would be tickets to The Standup Guys, a trio of clean comedians that will perform 8 p.m. Friday at Real Life Church, 23841 Newhall Ranch Road in Valencia. This isn’t a church function, but rather a comedy event to benefit SCV Habitat for Heroes, the effort to benefit veterans in the SCV. Tickets $17.50 or $20 for VIP tickets. Contact: Sarah Steffen 818-884-8808, email ssteffen@humanityca.org.

Paranormal investigation

Who doesn’t love a good ghost hunt? One of the most haunted places in the SCV will open its doors for a very special and limited attendance “Night of Paranormal Investigating” on Saturday. The event will be held to benefit the SCV Historical Society.

The event features a Sundown Dinner, paranormal activities presentation and special guest Mark Christopher Nelson of www.positively psychic.com. A night of paranormal investigation will be held. $75 per person. All proceeds to benefit the Historical Society. For tickets, call Linda Casebolt, 661-510-9438.

Armed Forces Day

A special tribute to our Armed Forces will be held at Santa Clarita’s Veterans Historical Plaza, 24275 Walnut St., in Newhall, at 11 a.m. on Saturday. We have an opportunity to thank some of our amazing men and women serving in the military, as we sincerely appreciate the tremendous sacrifices they make to help insure our freedom, liberty and way of life.

The annual Armed Forces Day Festival scheduled at Hart Park on May 19 had to be cancelled, according to a representative from Prayer Angels for the Military.

Bring a photo of your active duty loved one for the Military Board of Honor and if they’re deployed, bring their military address to be sent a care package from the community. Prayer requests accepted.

Prayer Angels for the Military will be accepting donations for care packages being sent to SCV deployed men and women, from our community.  Much needed items include beef jerky, granola bars, canned (pop-top) foods like Ravioli, hearty soups and canned fruits, drink packets for bottled water, hard candy (no chocolate), baby wipes, body wash, good razors, cool scarves and dog treats and toys for military dogs.

Visit  www.prayerangelsforthemilitary.com for a full list. Cards and letters of support are always a welcome and postage money is always needed. Donations can also be made through PayPal or mailed to 21609 Oak Orchard Road, Newhall, CA 91321. Contact Suzon or Dale for additional drop off locations: 661-799-8865 or email prayerangelsforthemilitary@yahoo.com.

Cinco de Mayo in Newhall

It was a festive Cinco de Mayo in downtown Newhall, where politicians (Scott Wilk) kissed babies, and businesses introduced themselves to potential customers (Martin Rodriguez of Pacific Funding and Carlos Avalos of Team Avalos of Keller Williams.)

The shared booth of Rodriguez and Avalos was among the most popular on Main Street, which had been closed down for the street fair event. Despite the heat, guests lined up to spin a wheel which offered prize tickets, toys, balloons or the opportunity to play fun games to earn a prize ticket to enter a drawing for a new barbecue.

There was music, food and entertainment.
