Valencia boys tennis saw its playoff push end unexpectedly following an 11-7 loss to Burroughs in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division II playoffs at Burroughs High School on Friday afternoon.

“We fought really hard and just came up really short. Our guys played really hard. Burroughs is just a really good team,” said Vikings head coach Annie Kellogg.

While the Vikings’ (20-4) depth enabled them to handle the back end of Burroughs’ lineup, the Indians top seven units were too tough for Valencia.

In particular, Burroughs No. 1 and nationally ranked singles player Garrett Approux swept Valencia’s usually dominant singles lineup.

“He’s easily one of the best players in the section, and probably the best in Division II,” Kellogg said. “He didn’t lose a single game in league play, so it shows a lot that J.R. got three off of him.”

After his dogfight with Approux, Macalutas rebounded to capture his final two sets 6-2, 6-0, with fellow singles players Joey Fernicola and Chris Pope adding a set 6-0 and 6-2 respectively.

Unfortunately, Valencia’s doubles teams were unable to carry over the success that they had enjoyed all season, contributing just three sets during Friday’s contest.

Valencia dropped just three sets in Foothill League play this year.

They captured the Foothill League title for the seventh straight season and posted the league’s top three singles players and doubles teams.

“This was definitely my most dominating team in a while, we just faced a really good opponent earlier than we would have liked to in the second round,” Kellogg said.

While their run as a team is over, the Vikings will send Macalutas and Fernicola to CIF-Southern Section Division II individual playoffs next Friday.

They will be joined by the doubles pairings of Cameron Braun and David Myers, and Jorriel Malabanan and Chad LeDuff who captured a set each against the Indians on Friday 6-0 and 6-0.
