Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, R-Santa Clarita, was named Repulican Caucus Chair on Monday, replacing an Assemblyman who was elected to the Senate.

"Since he arrived in Sacramento two years ago, Cameron Smyth has been a strong leader for Assembly Republicans and an effective representative for his constituents," said Assembly Republican Leader Mike Villines of Fresno. "With a proven track record of successful conservative leadership, he was a natural choice."

The Republican Caucus Chair is the second-highest-ranking Republican in the state Assembly, said Villines.

Smyth served as Santa Clarita mayor and City Councilman before his 2006 election to the 38th Assembly District, where he served as vice-chairman of the Assembly Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee.

He also served as co-chair of the Republican E3 Task Force, an environmental-business committee.

"I am honored to have been chosen ... and will work very hard to uphold the confidence that has been shown in me," said Smyth. "I know that there are many difficult challenges facing our state and our party in the months ahead."

An integral part of the Assembly Republican leadership team, the Caucus Chair assists the Assembly Republican Leader in advancing the Republican policy agenda and achieving the Caucus' political goals.

Additionally, the Caucus Chair regularly communicates with state Republican leaders on key legislative issues and party matters.

Smyth is a graduate of the University of California, Davis, where he was a two-sport athlete. He replaces former Assemblyman Bob Huff.
