Members of the public are invited to help create a public art sculpture at the new Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park Interpretive Center in Agua Dulce on June 2 and 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The interpretive center at Vasquez Rocks will house artifacts found at the park and provide information to visitors about the flora, fauna and geology of the Agua Dulce region. The sculpture by Didier Hess will be in the entry plaza of the facility.

During a free workshop, the public will be able to bring items less than 3 inches in diameter that can withstand compression - such as coins, medallions, keys, rocks, and locks of hair - to include in the sculpture.

The sculpture will reflect the geological forces that shaped Vasquez Rocks by using the earth excavated during the building of the new center to encase a bronze sculpture.

The dirt will be mixed with a small amount of concrete, and the objects that people bring will be selected for inclusion in the sculpture.

The earth is designed to erode away through the touches of visitors, eventually revealing the bronze sculpture within.

To sign up for the weekend workshop, please email contact@didierhess.com. Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park is at 10700 West Escondido Canyon Road in Agua Dulce.
