Money Wasted on Name Change

To The Editor:

I totally agree with Debbie Johnson's letter ('A Waste of $20,000, Feb. 20) that it is "an absolute waste of time and taxpayers' money to change the names of existing streets in downtown Newhall."

I have lived in this valley for 24 years, and I am absolutely outraged about the ignorance of the people in our community, or what I now call "The Stepford Valley." As Ms. Johnson said above, they can change the street names all they want, but I still won't shop in Newhall. It still remains the same as it was before the "revitalization," and I don't believe for a second that anything has changed despite the attempts by the City Council to make it different.

I am saddened by what has happened to this valley over the last 24 years. It used to be so family-friendly. Now it's all about what the City Council considers "significant matters" instead of the real issues. Every council member who voted for a $20,000 name change surely has opened the public's eyes to their ridiculous agenda (if you can call it that).

I say to them, deal with the real issues in this valley. Insane traffic congestion, the homeless shelter that seems to be such a huge issue every year ("not in MY backyard"), the Food Pantry, help for single parents, the huge issue of drugs with our children. I know, not your child, right? You better really open your eyes because it has become an epidemic in this valley which so many parents deny.

If you live in this valley, and you are not outraged about what is going on, you must be in denial. We are soon going to be closer to what is going on in the San Fernando Valley than you want to admit. And we know how bad it is down there.
